The author draws on a variety of sources, including chronicles, charters, and archaeological evidence, to provide a comprehensive account of the political, social, and cultural developments in Flanders during this period. The book explores the role of the Counts of Flanders in the defense of the region against foreign invaders, their efforts to promote economic growth and trade, and their patronage of the arts and religion. The author also examines the complex relationship between the Counts of Flanders and the French monarchy and the impact of the Hundred Years War on the region. Ultimately, this book offers a rich and nuanced understanding of the history of Flanders and its place within the broader context of medieval and Renaissance Europe. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Original vellum boards are scuffed at edges & worn/bumped at corners. Top corner of front board exhibits the number "93," most likely a previous owner's personal library catalogue system. Rear board exhibits a large water dampness stain which covers the bottom half of board. Fore-edges of boards are bent towards text-block (unsure if this was publisher's choice or simply the result of general wear). Faded hand-lettering found at top of spine, most likely the title, but hard to read. General soiling to spine & boards. Head and tail of spine rubbed, but intact. Both front and rear gutters split with exposed cording. Provenance found at top corner of front end-page. Title page is fragile & almost detached from binding - edges are chipped. Instances of age-stains throughout text-block, with average toning. Water dampness stain exhibited to top edge of title page to page 9 - text unimpeded. Another water dampness stain exhibited to top corner of pages 72 - 119 - text unimpeded. Tail of gutter split (including bottom cord) at page 141. Binding intact. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Beautiful printer's device (Plantin) on title page with a compass & motto: "Labore et Constantia." The Plantin Press at Antwerp was one of the focal centers of the fine printed book in the 16th century. Christophe Plantin (c. 1520-1589) of Touraine was trained as a bookbinder. He fled from Paris where at least one printer had recently been burned at the stake for heresy, and went to Antwerp. By 1555 he began to print books as a profession in Antwerp. Plantin took on an assistant, Jan Moretus (1543-1610), who could read Greek and Latin and could write correspondence in several modern languages. He became Plantin's business manager, son-in-law, and, eventually, his successor in the Plantin printing press. Under Moretus' management, the company focused on 12mo format for text-books, doing away with the smaller handbook (enchiridion), favored under his predecessor. Moretus' works and archives are held in the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp. This is Antwerp printing by a colleague of Christophe's: Iehan Withage (or, Jan Withagen). This work constitutes the first history of the County of Flanders, published in French. Flanders was one of the most powerful political entities in the medieval Low Countries, located on the North Sea coast of what is now Belgium. Unlike its neighbors it was in the territory of the Kingdom of France. The counts of Flanders held the most northerly part of the kingdom, and were among the original twelve peers of France. For centuries, the economic activity of the Flemish cities such as Ghent, Bruges and Ypres made Flanders one of the most affluent regions in Europe. Very early Plantin Press. Gift quality.
