This small book was issued as a promotional piece by Hood's Sarsaparilla. Both of the poets in this book were very popular during the later 19th century. Sarah Doudney's poem was written when she was 15 years old, and it was reprinted widely. Adams poem is a humour take on "The Water Mill" done in the German dialect the characterizes much of Adams work.

Softcover, bound in pictorial pink wraps, titled and elaborately illustrated in shades of black & gray on the front cover and with ads on the rear cover. [16] pages, with several textual illustrations. There is a miniscule tear to the bottom edge of the covers and pages and faint score marks to the rear cover. Very good. Two poems published as advertisement for Hood's Sarsaparilla. The title poem "The Water Mill" by Sarah Doudney is followed by "Der Vater-Mill" playfully written in Pennsylvania-German dialect by Charles Follen Adams. The two poems are interspersed with promotional material for Hood's Sarsaparilla, together with testimonials proclaiming how the product "Purifies the Blood", is "The Best Spring Medicine", "For That Tired Feeling", and that it "Cures Scrofula and all Humors", etc.The English fiction writer and poet Sarah Doudney (1841-1926) is the author of the first poem. Known for her hymns and children's literature, her poem "The Lesson of the Water-Mill" was written when she was just 15 years old and published in the Anglican Churchman's Family Magazine in 1864.The American writer of humorous poetry Charles Follen Adams (1842-1918) was best known for his poems written in Pennsylvania German dialect. "Der Vater-Mill" was published by Lothrop, Lee & Shephard in his book "Yawcob Struss and Other Poems".
