About the Book Topic: Focuses heavily on wildlife, freshwater ecology, and environmental conservation in South Africa. Format: Released as a 321-page hardcover edition featuring a dust jacket and detailed black-and-white illustrations throughout. Illustrator: Visuals for the book were beautifully contributed by the noted botanical and wildlife artist Auriel Batten. About the Author: Identity: Dr. Douglas Hey (1914-2008) was a foundational figure in South African ecology. Legacy: He served as the very first Director of Nature Conservation for the Cape Province from 1952 to 1979. Impact: His environmental advocacy and reports were instrumental in creating what is known today as the Table Mountain National Park. Why the Book is Scarce: Limited Print Run: Published in 1986 by Timmins Publishers (a South African regional publisher), the original print run was relatively small and primarily distributed within Southern Africa. Out of Print: The book has not been reprinted in decades. No modern paperback or digital Kindle editions exist, meaning the total physical supply is fixed and steadily declining.
