About the Book Content: The book is a collection of World War I soldiers' songs, primarily written or improvised by the soldiers themselves, that provide a raw and often explicit look into the humor and daily life in the trenches. It includes lyrics, musical notation, and illustrations by A.A. "Wally" Wallgren. Compilation: The songs were collected and transcribed during and after the war by Lieutenant John Jacob Niles. He edited the collection along with Douglas Moore. Themes: The songs cover a range of themes including illicit affairs, daily life of a soldier, conflict between military ranks, racism, anti-German rhetoric, and death, often in a way that challenged the romanticized portrayal of war found in official Army song books. The authors explain how Kontsevich's conjecture is equivalent to the identification of two different categories of Dirichlet branes. They also explore the ramifications and current state of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. They relate the ideas to active areas of research that include the McKay correspondence, topological quantum field theory, and stability structures. The authors were not satisfied to tell their story twice, from separate mathematics and physics points of view. Instead, theirs is a unified presentation offered in a way that both mathematicians and physicists can follow, without having all of the foundations of both subjects at their immediate disposal.

This is an exceptional copy in virtually fine condition - a… very rare wartime survivor. ***Near fine in the original colour illustrated stapled card covers. The covers are exceptionally clean, even the white back cover. Light creasing to the bottom corner tips of the last few pages. Slight splitting to the paper at the top of the spine. Staples rusted as usual. Internally also near fine - pages clean with hardly any of the usual foxing. A few marks and light creases - mainly production creasing as very thin paper was used (wartime paper restrictions were in force). No tears.
