About the Book Content: The book is a collection of World War I soldiers' songs, primarily written or improvised by the soldiers themselves, that provide a raw and often explicit look into the humor and daily life in the trenches. It includes lyrics, musical notation, and illustrations by A.A. "Wally" Wallgren. Compilation: The songs were collected and transcribed during and after the war by Lieutenant John Jacob Niles. He edited the collection along with Douglas Moore. Themes: The songs cover a range of themes including illicit affairs, daily life of a soldier, conflict between military ranks, racism, anti-German rhetoric, and death, often in a way that challenged the romanticized portrayal of war found in official Army song books. Publisher: It was published by The Macaulay Company in New York. A wonderful compendium of comic, bawdy and ironic songs sung by soldiers in World War I. With a section of songs sung by the Black soldiers, who were not integrated yet. With interesting notes on the background of the songs, and many cartoons by Wally Wallgren, the official cartoonist of "The Stars and Stripes". Abian A. Wally Wallgren (illustrator). Hardback. Condition: New. Research in string theory has generated a rich interaction with algebraic geometry, with exciting new work that includes the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. This monograph builds on lectures at the 2002 Clay School on Geometry and String Theory that sought to bridge the gap between the languages of st…ring theory and algebraic geometry, presenting an updated discussion that includes subsequent developments. The group of distinguished mathematicians and mathematical physicists who produced this monograph worked as a team to create a unique volume. Its overall goal is to explore the physical and mathematical aspects of Dirichlet branes. The narrative is organized around two principal ideas: Kontsevich's Homological Mirror, Symmetry conjecture, and the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. The authors explain how Kontsevich's conjecture is equivalent to the identification of two different categories of Dirichlet branes. They also explore the ramifications and current state of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. They relate the ideas to active areas of research that include the McKay correspondence, topological quantum field theory, and stability structures. The authors were not satisfied to tell their story twice, from separate mathematics and physics points of view. Instead, theirs is a unified presentation offered in a way that both mathematicians and physicists can follow, without having all of the foundations of both subjects at their immediate disposal.

Vol.2, No.8 - the eighth issue in the original series of the historic Poetry magazine, designed and edited by Tambimuttu, with the Henry Moore designed colour cover illustration of The Lyre Bird. This is an exceptional copy in virtually fine condition - a… very rare wartime survivor. ***Near fine in the original colour illustrated stapled card covers. The covers are exceptionally clean, even the white back cover. Light creasing to the bottom corner tips of the last few pages. Slight splitting to the paper at the top of the spine. Staples rusted as usual. Internally also near fine - pages clean with hardly any of the usual foxing. A few marks and light creases - mainly production creasing as very thin paper was used (wartime paper restrictions were in force). No tears. The centre-spread of illustrations is printed on higher quality cartridge paper. Spine tight. ***64 pages (plus adverts on inside of front cover, and to make the maximum use of the covers, continuation of text on both sides of the back cover. 248mm x 185mm. ***Contents: Kenneth Allott: The Memory of Yeats; Audrey Beecham: Poem; Laurence Clark: To the Muse, Memo, First Fortnight of War; Stephen Coates: Poem; G. No. 8 - the eighth issue of the original first series of this renowned poetry magazine, edited by Tambimuttu, published during the Second World War. Of interest to collectors of poetry first editions, and the publications of Poetry London. ***The wartime issues of Poetry (London) magazine are now quite scarce, and copies in such nice collectable condition are seldom seen. Issue No. 8 was the second of the series to have a full colour cover, and be expanded from 36 to 64 pages, which was quite a challenge considering it was published under wartime restrictions. A superb example of this magazine. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Henry Moore (Colour cover design) (illustrator).
