Chacornac a qualifié de "traité de mystique hermétique", est aussi mystérieux que son auteur qui l'a rédigé dans le cachot de "Sonnenstein" (la pierre solaire) en 1732."Dubois-Mambrini, qui a réédité l'ouvrage en 1791 ne l'aurait pas compris absolument mais l'appréciait tout uniquement comme mystique dans la tradition théosophique de Boehme, Gichtel et Saint-Martin, tandis que Klosz l'avait inclus dans sa Bibliographie de la Franc-Maçonnerie. D'autres encore voient en l'auteur un hermétiste notoire, se basant sur le fait que le recueil de posésies latines joint au volume et intitulé Hortulus Sacer, présente un caractère nettement alchimique.
