The author, Downes [1864-1926] was the daughter of Irish emigrant parents and worked for years as secretary to a Baptist minister and her faith inspired much of her work. Presentation inscription to 'Doris May' on the title page, but much later, 'Oct. 1945', and not from the author. 'Doris May' might possibly be the writer and traveller, Doris May Gentile, though in 1945 whe was living in Italy, having been trapped there during the war. Additionally, the book bears the ex Libris of Nancye Kent Perry [1918-2011] entomologist and, later, artist. The ex libris must have been designed by herself as it incorporates insects and a dog (she was a skilled dog trainer, as well as her other substantial accomplishments).…
