Lincoln was not to be the main speaker at Gettysburg. He was invited only because he was president of the United States, and could thus make the dedication of the cemetery official. The main attraction that day was supposed to be Edward Everett of Massachusetts, a learned man and one of the most famous orators of the day. But we all know how that worked out. Everett wrote to Lincoln on the following day: "Should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near the central idea of the occasion in two hours as you did in two minutes.".
