Nissen évoque un portrait gravé que l'on ne rencontre jamais. Le complément comporte les planches numérotées 14 à 16, en lithographie d'après Terver. Il est revêtu de la signature autographe de l'auteur, authentifiant l'exemplaire. In fine a été placé une table manuscrite faisant l'énumération des espèces de coquilles des ouvrages de Draparnaud & Michaud. Ce traité, l'un des premiers à s'intéresser aux coquillages d'eaux douces et de terre sèche, fait suite au Tableau des mollusques terrestres et fluviatiles publié en 1801, qui offrait une approche méthodologique. Ici, Draparnaud traite de 173 espèces, dont un grand nombre sont décrites pour la première fois, réparties en 19 genres ; son travail s'illustre de très belles planches gravées en taille-douce d'après les dessins de ses élèves Grateloup et Decluzeau, montant les coquilles et limaces grandeur nature. L'ouvrage remporta dans tout le monde savant un succès sans précédent et fut loué pour sa clarté, sa concision et la simplicité de sa méthode ; il reçut les éloges, entre autres, de Lamarck, Cuvier et Lacépède, qui rédigèrent à son sujet un Rapport qui a été joint à la suite de l'Avertissement.
