Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. She is constantly confronted by Catherine Drew who likes to torment and destroy people. (illustrator). Book Club Edition. That was a night of gold and red, with torches flaming on the hilltop and the lights of Charlotte Amalie fanning out around the harbor below. A night of water lily and sweet-smelling cercus. The night of the shell. Thus a master of romantic suspense creates a moment of high drama in her new novel. Phyllis A. Whitney, the American counterpart of Mary Stewart and Victoria Holt, evokes-as a reviewer said of her bestselling Sea Jade-"the same atmosphere of shuddering mystery as a ruined old castle in the moonlight or an old London street wrapped in winter fog. There is always something just beyond the edge of vision, waiting to pounce." Jessica Abbott, fleeing her own past, finds herself the center of a whirlpool of conflict at Hampden House, high on its cliff in the Virgin Islands. She is confronted by Catherine Drew, a woman whose sole purpose is to torment and destroy. Catherine is the wife of a vital, driven man, Kingdon Drew-toward whom Jessica is irresistibly drawn. Jessica must defy the beautiful, self-indulgent Catherine, who likes to affect the name of a shell-Columbella. She must fight for the very future of another woman's child. Above all she must find the strength to help the man she loves escape the trap Catherine has set for him. Yet each day Catherine seems to mock her in a new way-and win. Until the night of the shell. Always the brilliant island sun shines over Hampden House in St. Thomas and over Caprice, the plantation in St. Croix that is crumbling to eerie ruin, guarded by its unicorns. Always the threat of a hurricane looms over this exotic setting, where the past still affects the present. And, like a hurricane, the suspense mounts in this, Phyllis A. Whitney's most exciting and chilling novel.

This book is a thorough phonetic reader designed for use by teachers of phonetics to pupils between the ages of eight and eleven who are learning English as their first language. It is the first volume of a three-volume series, and it teaches English phonetics according to the International Phonetic Association's system. This phonetic reader uses a variety of extracts as its source material, such as stories, plays, and poems, to represent the different English dialects and the spoken language of everyday life. The introduction to the book includes helpful tips on how to use it, and there are errata pages at the end to correct certain errors in the text. The author provides exercises and games to help the student with practical application, and the book is designed to promote a strong foundation in English phonetics. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
