Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First Edition. First Edition. Hardcover. Dig into this 1906 first edition for outfit inspiration beyond the grave, through the sepulchral memorials and funerary art of 13th to 16th century England. Known as monumental brasses, these ghostly visages of the noble dead were engraved into brass before being set into the floors of English churches and remain important and authentic evidence of armor, heraldry, fashion, and family history in the Late Middle Ages and the Early Renaissance in England. Lift the shroud of centuries and come face to face with armored knights and robed priests, monied merchants and ivory towered scholars, and, in a dedicated chapter, admire the veils and wimples, head-dresses and coronets, surplice-sleeved gowns and embroidered petticoats, ruffs, lace, garlands, and braids of the magnificently-attired ladies in the reigns of Henry VII to Elizabeth I. The ecclesiastical, academic, military, civilian, legal, and ladylike attire depicted in these funereal forms are preserved here in 110 photographs, rubbings, and renderings from the monuments themselves. 9" X 6 1/4". xvii, [ii], 384pp. Presents nicely in protective archival jacket. Bound in deep royal blue cloth over boards, with spine lettered in gilt. Mild wear to binding, with rubbing and bumping to corners and head and tail of spine, faint black mark to spine, and light scattered rubbing to cloth. Top edge gilt. Occasional leaf unopened. Bookseller's ticket of Galloway & Porter of Cambridge to front pastedown. Gift inscription dated Christmas 1906 to flyleaf: "For my dearest Duke with devoted love from Queenie." Toning and foxing to endpapers and preliminaries, else pages clean and unmarked. Hinges tender, with a peek of webbing visible; binding remains sound. Illustrated in 110 illustrations.
