Add to basket??? ??????????? ?????? ? ????? 3,950 ?????? ? ?????????, ? ??????????? ?????????????, ?????????? ? ????????????????? ????????: A remarkable survival of nineteenth-century Russian musical publishing: Twenty-Five Songs and Romances of the Moscow Gypsies, arranged for piano by Alexandre Dubuque and issued in four parts by the Moscow publisher K. I. Meikov. This collection belongs to the golden age of the Russian "Gypsy romance," a uniquely urban musical phenomenon in which Romani vocal traditions, Russian sentimental poetry, salon culture, and theatrical performance merged into one of the most emotionally charged genres of Imperial Russia. Alexandre Dubuque?born in Moscow to a French émigré family, trained by John Field, and later associated with the Moscow Conservatory?was among the key architects of the nineteenth-century Russian romance. He composed more than 170 songs and romances and became especially admired for his arrangements of folk and Gypsy repertory. Contemporary accounts note that his works formed a substantial part of the repertory of Moscow's celebrated Gypsy choirs and soloists. To understand this edition, one must understand the Russian fascination with "tsyganshchina"?the romanticised cult of Gypsy music that flourished throughout the nineteenth century. Beginning in late eighteenth-century Moscow, aristocrats and merchants alike became captivated by Romani choirs whose performances combined emotional vocal delivery, improvisatory ornamentation, striking harmonic colour, and the distinctive accompaniment of the Russian seven-string guitar. By the mid-nineteenth century, the "Gypsy romance" had become an emotional language of urban Russia?music of longing, nostalgia, fatalism, intoxication, and impossible love. This collection is especially appealing because it captures that culture not as later folklore, but as living repertoire from the Imperial period itself, published for domestic music-making while these songs were still actively performed by Moscow's famous Romani ensembles. Moscow, rather than Saint Petersburg, was widely regarded as the spiritual capital of the Gypsy romance. The publisher's stamp?"Property of the Publisher K. I. Meikov in Moscow"?adds an important bibliographical dimension. Meikov's music shop served Moscow's educated amateur market, while the designation "Commission Agent to the Imperial Court Singing Chapel" reflects an official commercial relationship with one of the Empire's most prestigious musical institutions, signalling quality, legitimacy, and elite cultural alignment in the competitive world of nineteenth-century music publishing. This surviving set consists of all four parts, preserving the integrity of the original publication, although Parts II and IV lack their original wrappers, as often occurs with music intended for active household use. Part IV has its spine discreetly reinforced with archival conservation paper. Occasional minor foxing, water stains. Far more than sheet music, this is a direct witness to one of the most distinctive musical obsessions of Imperial Russia. Complete multi-part sets of such ephemeral domestic publications are increasingly scarce, particularly with original publisher markings intact.
