28x22 cm. First edition in English. Later 1/2 leather with red morocco spine label and raised bands gilt. Rear joint going. TEG, other edges uncut. 642, [12] pp. folding map with later linen backing. Internally excellent. Stevens, Son & Stiles - Rare Americana Catalogue, [1926], No.1869: "The extremely rare First Issue in English. . The first Issue in 4to., of which the present copy is an example, consists of one volume only, quite complete in itself, and from the Translator's Preface there does not appear to have ben any intention of extending the work. It was, however, re-issued in the same year with a reprinted title-page and a second volume added." Sabin 39057: "The observations of this distinguished author, made during a three years' residence, extend to the political constitution of the country, the manners, etc., of the inhabitants, its physical state and natural history. The translator appears to have executed his task faithfully, and to be well acquainted with the country described. His notes frequently increase the information, and sometimes correct the errors of the original." The map shows from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River and includes the proposed, but never created, states of Franklinia in western North Carolina and Morgania in what later became Missouri. Map references: Dotson & Baker (OWA) 14.2, Baynton-Williams 11, McCorkle 799.9. This edition of La Rochfoucauld-Liancourt's Travels is sufficiently rare that it is not mentioned in Howes, Clark, or Sabin, even though it clearly is a predecessor to the 2-volume edition of 1799 which is most frequently referred to as the first edition in English of this important work. Clark (Old South) 2: 103, Howes L106, Sabin 39057.

2 vols. 8vo, old marbled wrappers with ms. paper labels on spines, preserved in a utilitarian portfolio. First French edition of the 1787 Federal Constitution, in addition to the thirteen state constitutions, the Declaration d'Independance, Articles de Confederation; and several treaties. Howes C-716. This was Kenneth Nebenzahl's copy, with his book label inside the portfolio. An uncut copy, in very attractive original condition. Translated and published at the suggestion of Benjamin Franklin, who likely contributed footnotes. He wrote in late 1783: "The extravagant Misrepresentations of our Political State in foreign Countries, made it appear necessary to give them better information, which I though could not be more efectually and authentically done, than by publishing a Translation into French.".
1791. Lockyer Davis, Royal Society, 170 pages. Except four quite wet pages at the begginig, good state; complete and fresh. Little lacks on the corners of the cover. Français.
