"Les documents consultés présentent des niveaux d'intérêt très divers, seulement un petit nombre de ces documents peut être considéré comme fondamental ; en revanche, la majorité d'entre eux n'aborde ce sujet que de façon superficielle et se limite souvent à la répétition d'ouvrages antérieurs. Toute indication quant à la valeur relative de chaque article a été volontairement évitée, de manière à laisser aux lecteurs l'entière liberté d'appréciation selon le domaine dans lequel ils se sentent concernés. Un reçu de Pagnerre pour "travaux littéraires". 3. Trois lettres (8 pp. in-8) évoquant son engagement politique auprès de Garnier-Pagès. "Depuis que je suis ici j'ai travaillé avec acharnement. Aussi, depuis quelques jours, mon cerveau n'a plus de ressort. Dans le même espace de temps, je produis moitié moins que dans les premiers jours. Voyant cela, je me suis commandé un peu de repos, et pour me distraire, j'ai lié partie d'aller aux fêtes de St Sébastien [.]. Quand ce déplaisir est aggravé par un péril de fortune, c'est bien pire encore. Mais tu n'es pas seulement un commerçant, tu as été et tu es un homme politique et comme tu n'en as guère que les inconvénients, il est juste que cela continue [.]. Pour moi, plus je vais, plus je m'insurge contre toute idée d'action politique. Ce que je viens de faire me prouve heureusement que ma volonté n'est pas morte, comme je le craignais ; à mesure que je travaille, mon cerveau s'éclaircit [.]. Cela convient tellement à mon caractère qu'il faudra bien que cela convienne à mes goûts. J'ai eu de tes nouvelles par Pagès, mais j'ai été bien content d'en avoir par toi-même [.].
