Ducommun began as a hardware supply store whose main clientele included pioneers and gold prospectors hoping to strike it rich during the California Gold Rush. With technological advances and the advent of widespread aviation during the 1920s, the company ventured into the aerospace industry. Notably, Ducommun supplied parts for planes designed by aircraft designer Donald Douglas and others flown by aviator Charles Lindbergh. The company's partnership with Donald Douglas marked its longstanding specialization in the aerospace industry. During World War II, Ducommun gained prominence as a distributor of metals used for American military aircraft. Ducommun is considered the oldest surviving company in California and continues its work in the aerospace industry as well as the defense and industrial industries.

The Ducommun company was in the forefront of metal supplies in the area of that industry's greatest expansion during World War II and then following the war years its focus was one of the major suppliers for both the aircraft and fledgling space industry. Their close proximity to Douglas made them major suppliers for both the Atlas and Apollo programs. Their catalog in 1958 was only 256 pages. This catalog was nearly four times larger and also had by now 12 instead of 7 major service centers. Bound in blue cloth lettered in gilt.
