The only book on Purism, L'Esprit Nouveau is a key contribution to the study of classic 20th-century modernism in painting and architecture. The book serves as the catalogue for an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The revealing volume examines over 75 paintings by Le Corbusier, Ozenfant, and their closest colleague, Fernand Leger. At the heart of the study lies a single work: Le Corbusier's striking design of the Pavillon de l'Esprit Nouveau for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs, at which the term 'Art Deco' was coined. The first part contains surveys of a foundational nature, including an introduction to Berkovich analytic spaces by M. Temkin, and to etale cohomology by A. Ducros, as well as a short note by C. Favre on the topology of some Berkovich spaces. The second part focuses on applications to geometry. A second text by A. Ducros contains a new proof of the fact that the higher direct images of a coherent sheaf under a proper map are coherent, and B. Remy, A. Thuillier and A. Werner provide an overview of their work on the compactification of Bruhat-Tits buildings using Berkovich analytic geometry. The third and final part explores the relationship between non-archimedean geometry and dynamics. A contribution by M. Jonsson contains a thorough discussion of non-archimedean dynamical systems in dimension 1 and 2. Finally a survey by J.-P. Otal gives an account of Morgan-Shalen's theory of compactification of character varieties. This book will provide the reader with enough material on the basic concepts and constructions related to Berkovich spaces to move on to more advanced research articles on the subject. Au poète et journaliste Paul Delasalle (1812-1845), directeur de la Revue des Provinces. Très rare entête de la Revue des Provinces. Cette revue créée le 1er novembre 1834 avait à l'origine pour sous titre « Journal de la réforme philosophique et littéraire ». Notre entête dit : « Journal de la réforme, littérature art et sciences ». Elle voulait concilier religion et progrès. « Lamartine, Hugo, Ballanche sont vénérés comme les prêtres de l'idée nouvelle, les apôtres et les poètes de la régénération sociale qui s'accomplit » (voir la Revue des provinces de France, tome I, 1927-1928, p.315 à 317). Elle mourut après son 8e numéro du 15 février 1835. Ducros y publia de la poésie. Interessante lettre à propos du journal, mentionnant que Pinondel pourrait être l'unique propriétaire et « s'engage à laisser toute influence » à Delasalle. « tu sais qu'il est garçon d'honneur et qu'on se peut fier à sa parole ». « La chose étant ainsi, je pense pouvoir m'engager à avoir pour la revue nouvelle de hautes et fortes sympathies. [Victor] Hugo qui a suivi attentivement la revue du Calvados me parlait hier de toi en bons termes et serait tout porté pour toi. Nous aurions encore Lamartine et cela aurait alors une aura bonne utile pour tous et pour nous ». On voit donc que, dès le début, la revue était amenée à évoluer.
