Full orange cloth binding with black labels, orange & white endpapaers, photo portrait frontispiece, photo plates throughout, 333 pp. Some discoloration to cloth, but generally a nice copy lacking the dust jacket. Wirkus was crowned Faustin II, King of La Gonâve, part of Haiti, by Queen Ti Memenne in 1926. He was, however, also a US Marine and he was transferred back to America after three years. His royal title was decreed upon him for two coincidences: his first name is the same as a 19th-century king, and he just so happened to rescue the queen of La Gonave when she was in trouble. Along with Seabrook's Magic Island, this is a book with some early information on Haiti's voodoo.
