The author notes that rapidly growing girls may be especially vulnerable to spinal deformities that are not caused by diseases, but by bad posture stemming from physical inactivity and the wearing of fashionable but physically restrictive corsets and clothing. The author argues that the focus on physical routine and fashion was ultimately at the expense of young women's physical well-being. It was only with increased understanding of physical education and the influence of physical health on spinal health that societal views on female fashion and routine began to change. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First Edition
First edition. Tall 8vo., full contemporary calf, x, (2), (1)-135pp. With an engraved frontispiece. Outer hinges rubbed with a short split in the gutter of the rear hinge but in fact a better than very good copy. This very intelligent, practical, popular, and at the same time a scientific work, upon a subject which daily increases in interest, in proportion to the increasing prevalence of female deformities in the middle and upper ranks of society, arising from an erroneous system of education; or, we may rather say, from the absurd methods employed to prevent deformities, and produce elegance of shape and carriage, which very methods are certain to produce precisely the opposite effects to what is intended.
