Le texte serait la transcription des souvenirs de Dermoncourt, chargé par Louis-Philippe de réprimer les derniers soubresauts de la chouannerie. Dermoncourt, qui avait effectué en effet une partie de sa carrière aux côtés du général Dumas, était le parrain du futur écrivain.
