Vietnam and in Southern China were either authored by and also illustrated by De Longlay. . * WHO WAS THE ARTIST: DICK DE LONGLAY [1846-1893]: . Dick de Lonlay is the pseudonym of George Hardouin, born Saint-Malo in 1846, died Moscow September 25, 1893], French writer, journalist book illustrator and cartoonist. . Former regimental guides of the Imperial Guard, he published major stories and specializes in contemporary military history by publishing the stories of the Franco-Prussian War. He also writes and illustrated his own stories with his drawings, while on French military campaigns. . He then became a war correspondent for The Illustrated World, especially during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, in 1889 he became editor of the newspaper THE FLAG, the official organ of the League of Patriots, founded by Paul Déroulède. . He was an eminent journalist and traveled with the French military on their expeditions called the "SINO-FRENCH WAR" [Chinese: Zhongfa Zhànzheng, French: Guerre Franco-Chinoise, Vietnamese: Chien Tranh Pháp-Thanh] against N. Vietnam and China, August 1884-April 1885. This war was also known as the "TONKIN WAR" and the "TONQUIN WAR." It was a limited conflict fought to decide whether France would supplant China's control of Tonkin [northern Vietnam. Although the Chinese armies performed better than in other 19th century foreign wars and the war ended with French defeat on land, the French gained most of the aims they wanted in the Treaty of Tientsin. . The French also successfully blockaded Formosa, and occupation of Keelung, Admiral Courbet's squadron attacks on Fuzhou, and in the Min river, riots in Hong Kong, French alliance with Japan.
