Born in New York state, of mixed parentage, Duncanson lived and worked in Canada and Ohio before taking up painting full-time. Travels to Europe influenced his painting, as did the landscape painters of the Hudson River School. He painted portraits and also murals, most notably the Taft murals in Cincinnati.** This work is part of the Sigma Pi Phi Series, which presents research on noteworthy black people of notable achievements. The author, James Dallas Parks (1907-1983), was both an accomplished artist who exhibited widely and an art historian. In his work he emphasized the contributions of Black artists, as in his biography of Duncanson.** First edition.
