Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. Like new condition, like new DJ, no interior marks. As the guarantor of international security, the United States must commit to a long-term military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. But what are the tools necessary to succeed on the new battlefields of the Long War? In this vol…ume, a group of the foremost U. S. military officials and national security experts analyze the American experience in Iraq and Afghanistan thus far in order to map a way forward--not only for the military, but for diplomats, elected officials, and the American public. Thomas Donnelly, Frederick W. Kagan, and their coauthors offer several core lessons for success in The Long War. They argue that decentralizing command is the key to efficient operations on an ever-changing battlefield; that air power is the unsung hero of counterinsurgency warfare; that public opinion can influence crucial military decisions; and that the military should minimize its role in domestic affairs. Finally, although the battlefields have changed over the last fifty years, the authors contend that America's long-held counterinsurgency strategy--to foster political support at home, employ diplomacy overseas, and extend military assistance to allies--remains effective. The Long War will not soon be over. But, in the words of retired Army special forces officer Colonel Robert Killebrew, the United States already has "the tools it needs in order to prevail in the wars of the twenty-first century.".

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st. x, 241 pages, [12] pages of plates, illustrations (some colour); 25 cm. Tight, clean copy. Fine DJ. A fine copy of the first printing. *** "America is a nation of ardent, knowledgeable birdwatchers. But how did it become so? And what role did the field guide play in o…ur passion for spotting, watching, and describing birds? In the Field, Among the Feathered tells the history of field guides to birds in America from the Victorian era to the present, relating changes in the guides to shifts in science, the craft of field identification, and new technologies for the mass reproduction of images. Drawing on his experience as a passionate birder and on a wealth of archival research, Thomas Dunlap shows how the twin pursuits of recreation and conservation have inspired birders and how field guides have served as the preferred method of informal education about nature for well over a century. The book begins with the first generation of late 19th-century birdwatchers who built the hobby when opera glasses were often the best available optics and bird identification was sketchy at best. As America became increasingly urban, birding became more attractive, and with Roger Tory Peterson's first field guide in 1934, birding grew in both popularity and accuracy. By the 1960s recreational birders were attaining new levels of expertise, even as the environmental movement made birding's other pole, conservation, a matter of human health and planetary survival. Dunlap concludes by showing how recreation and conservation have reached a new balance in the last 40 years, as scientists have increasingly turned to amateurs, whose expertise had been honed by the new guides, to gather the data they need to support habitat preservation." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Shooting birds with opera glasses; A book for a hobby, 1889-1920; Knowledge & skills; The field guide comes of age; Birds over America; Birding in a silent spring; Environmental birding; Conclusion: the gyre. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. "The controversy over DDT played a pivotal part in the formation of the environmentalist movement in the United States. Thomas Dunlap places this controversy in historical perspective and provides a case study of the involvement of scientists, citizens, and various en…vironmentalist groups in the formation of public policy on pesticide residues. He treats the complex relationships among government agencies, the land-grant universities and their experiment stations, private industries, and the various sciences. He also reveals the nature of American support for science and the ways in which the social, economic, and political context of the scientists' work influenced their research and conditioned the effect of that research on policy. After tracing the development of regulation and research on pesticides in the pre-DDT period, Professor Dunlap describes the gradual discovery of DDT's properties in the environment and the growth of opposition to its use. He then discusses the legal and public battle over DDT from 1967, when the first suits were filed, to 1972, when the Environmental Protection Agency banned it. An epilogue brings the story to 1979. The author's sources include papers, correspondence, and interviews of members of the Environmental Defense Fund, as well as the legal documents from the Wisconsin hearing of 1968 to 1969 and the EPA's hearing of 1971 to 1972"--Bookjacket. Piece(s) of the spine missing. Due to age and/or environmental conditions, the pages of this book have darkened. Former library book. Mylar protector included.
