Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 12mo, xii, (11)-390 pgs, frontis portrait. Original blind stamped brown cloth with gilt title and decoration on the spine, and with beveled edges. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Minor wear to corners and spine ends; spine a bit faded, with gilt bright. Interior is clean and… tight. With clear mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: At the outbreak of the war, the author enlisted in the 14th Connecticut Infantry and was later made captain of Company G. From 1862 to 1864 Captain Fiske wrote a long series of letters to his home paper, The Springfield Republican, under the pen name "Dunn Browne". Beginning before the Battle of Sharpsburg and continued from one northern Virginia campaign to another, his letters are a valuable contemporary account of the war. He was at Gettysburg, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, where he was taken prisoner. He was held at Libby for a short time before being exchanged. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness. REFERENCES: DORN CN 56; COULTER 162: "Letters originally published in the Springfield Republican comprise the text of this book. Fiske was mostly interested in army life among his fellow soldiers and in political developments in the North, and had little to say about that part of the Confederacy which he invaded." NEVINS I pg 88: "Above-average memoir by a minister who became a captain in the 14th Connecticut and died in action in the Wilderness.".
