Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition Presumed. No stated date but believed to be late 1930s or early 1940s. Presumed first edition. xii, 212pp. This is the story of a young South African who, after serving with distinction in the 1914-18 war, disgraced himself over a worthless woman. Then came a period of "roughing it" in America, after which he worked his passage to France and joined the famous Foreign Legion. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the corners and heavier bumping with some fading and a little damage to the cloth at spine ends. There is some damp spotting and fading on the fore edge of the front board and a water stain around the bottom corner of the rear board. The contents are tight and clean with a faint stain near the bottom corner of the rear fixed endpaper and a name and date has been written on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and a large red stain is visible on the reverse of the wrapper around the bottom rear corner. Small pieces are missing from the corner tips, about 1/4" from the bottom of the spine, a larger piece from the bottom rear spine corner, up to about 1/2" from the top of the spine and up to about 1/4" from parts of the top front and rear edges. The top front edge has noticeable creasing and there are several small tears on the top edge. The bottom spine edges have tears of up to about 1 1/2" and these tears together with some other smaller tears on the edges have been repaired on the reverse with document repair tape.
