Cette thèse expérimentale et novatrice lui valut une médaille d'argent de la Faculté. En 1882, est nommé chirurgien des hôpitaux de Paris. En 1911, malade, il est contraint de quitter le service de clinique chirurgicale. À la faveur de cette retraite anticipée, il réalisa la synthèse de son expérience et de ses connaissances dans le présent ouvrage, publié de 1919 à 1921 : cette somme magistrale ? elle comprend trois tomes et près de 4000 pages ? demeure encore de nos jours un ouvrage de référence.
