The inclusion of comparative tables aligning Anjou and Maine statutes illustrates the jurisdictional patchwork of France before 1789, making the work an indispensable source for understanding the transition from regional coutumes to the centralized Napoleonic Code. Issued by Joseph Gentil at Châteaugontier, this is a true provincial imprintâ"scarcer than the Paris coutumiers and of particular appeal to collectors of regional law. Durson, fut donnée encore à Château-Gontier en 1733, in-12 ; mais l'arrêt du conseil du 31 mars 1739 vint brusquement arrêter l'essor de cet établissement typographique, en mettant Château-Gontier au nombre des villes où, à partir de l'arrêt, l'imprimerie demeurera supprimée : en conséquence, elle ne figure pas au Rapport Sartines, en 1764 ; le fait vaut la peine d'être enregistré, puisque sur les quarante-six villes du royaume dont l'arrêt de 1'739 supprime les établissements typographiques, près de la moitié trouva le moyen de maintenir ses presses en exercice, grâce à l'excessive indulgence avec laquelle cet arrêt fut exécuté » (Deschamps).Bel exemplaire.Gouron & Terrin, 246 ; Deschamps, col. 290 ; É.
