Couverture rigide. These data were analysed by the mathematician and economist E.E. Duvillard who published a pamphlet in 1806 that examined smallpox mortaliy and the potential effects of vaccination on population and longevity. His analysis showed the devastating impact of smallpox mortality and the considerable benefits brought by vaccination."; Westergaard, Contributions to the history of statistics, pp. 94-95 : "It was not his principal aim to calculate a life-table but only to obtain means for a comparison of the effects of vaccination, and in this respect it would probably serve fairly well. Unfortunately, several authors who afterwards criticized Duvillard have only had this table in view, without thinking of the problem under discussion. As stated his books is, on the whole, very little known, and only very few copies seems to be preserved."; R.Pressat : "essai célèbre . qui se présente comme la première anticipation scientifique en matière de mortalité." ; Caselli G et al. : Demography: Analysis and Synthesis, 2005, vol. Add to basketFirst edition of the major work by one of the first authors of mortality tables, a statistical study of the impact of the smallpox vaccine. The latter half of the volume reproduces Duvillard's tables recording the rates of population, vaccination, and death for each age up to 110. Emmanuel Étienne Duvillard (1755-1832), a Swiss-French actuary and political economist, worked as director of the Bureau of Statistics in the French Department of the Interior from 1805-1821. In the Analyse, which was published under the auspices of the Academie Royale des Sciences, Duvillard collects population information, drawn from various communities across France during the Ancien Régime, to argue that individuals are most susceptible to smallpox (la petite vérole) between the ages of 10 and 11. For its analysis of vaccination (by contrast with earlier statistical works, which had focused on inoculation), Duvillard's work "has been rightly described by Farr as a classic of vital statistics" (Greenwood, p. 66). Garrison & Morton 1695. Yuri Blondi, "Duvillard's Recherches sur les rentes (1787) and the modified internal rate of return: a comparative analysis", Pioneers of Financial Economics, 2006; Major Greenwood, Medical Statistics from Graunt to Farr, 1948. Quarto (296 x 217 mm). Tables and diagrams of formulas in the text. Contemporary half calf, smooth spine ruled with Greek key rolls in gilt, black morocco label, speckled paper sides, red silk bookmarker. Early notation "2" to front cover, infrequent ink annotations and sidelining to contents. Light bumping and wear, minor spots of finger soiling to covers, slight browning to endpapers, minor foxing to contents, wormholes to various upper and outer margins: a very good copy.

Bound in at the end of this copy are 8 leaves of printed notices on Duvillard and his works dated between 1790 and 1814. SOLE EDITION. G&M 1695. By 1806 the universal benefit of vaccination was widely known and acknowledged, but only in general terms. Duvillard showed statistically not only the extent of smallpox among the population, but also among various classes of the population, and, most importantly, the effect of smallpox vaccination on the mortality rate and on life expectancy. This was the first important statistical study of the result of preventive measures on a particular disease (although Jurin in 1723 had shown statistically the difference in mortality rates between natural and inoculated smallpox). Duvillard was head of the statistical department of population in the French Ministry of the Interior, and had good information from which to work. ?It was not his principal aim to calculate a life-table but only to obtain means for a comparison of the effects of vaccination, and in this respect it would probably serve fairly well. Unfortunately, several authors who afterwards criticised Duvillard have only had this table in view, without thinking of the problem under discussion. As stated his book is, on the whole, very little known, and only very few copies seem to be preserved? (Westergaard, Contributions to the history of statistics, 94?95).
