Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Interesting account from a Northern Civil War officer who went, among others, to modernize the Egyptian army, where they participated in the Khedive's ill-fated efforts to conquer Ethiopia in the 1870s. Dye is critical of the organization & leadership of the Egyptians. Hardcover, as pictured; the first edition, but in an uninspired new plain buckram binding, rather stiff, but certainly readable. Hint of wear, paper tanned. Text clean; xvi, 494 pages; frontispiece engraving, large folding map with short tear; appendix listing 48 Americans in the service of the Khedive from 1869 to 1878. Size: Octavo.
