Trade card for M. C. Weir's Steam Dyeing and Cleaning Establishment in Auburn, New York. Trade cards are antique business cards that first became popular during the late seventeenth century in Paris and Lyon, France and London, England. Trade cards were often given by business owners and proprietors to patrons and customers as a way to promote their businesses. Prior to the use of street addresses, trade cards had maps so clients could locate the associated business. Many of these cards also incorporated elaborate designs, illustrations, and other decorative features. Trade cards became popular in the United States during the nineteenth century in the period after the Civil War. The late nineteenth century also saw the advent of trade card collecting as a hobby. While they are no longer in use, trade cards influenced the formation of trading cards and were the predecessors of modern-day business cards.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Excerpt from Experimental Researches Concerning the Philosophy of Permanent Colours, Vol. 1: And the Best Means of Producing Them It will be seen, also, that in the following pages I have not adopted the name of chlorine, by which Sir H. Davy would distinguish that substance, which Scheele suppos ed to be muriatic acid, freed from hydrogene; and which Berthollet afterwards, with the general concurrence of modern chemists, declared to be muriatic acid, com bined with oxy gene; whence It was denominated oxyge nated muriatic acid, and by abbreviation, oxymuriatic acid. Whether Sir H. Davy be correct in adopting Scheele's view of the nature of the oxymuriatic, and the muriatic acids, and in concluding, as he has dohe from his'own experiments, that the former (chlorine) is a simple or elementary substance, and that the latter Consists of hydrogene and chlorine in equal volumes; or whether the French chemists, (in conceding to Davy, that no experiment has yet incontestably proved that oxymuriatic acid gas contains oxygene) are, notwith standing, justified in concluding, that the theory which admits or~ supposes this to be the case, is more natural, and accords better with the whole system of chemicitl facts, than the Opposite theory, is a question which seems to be yet attended with doubt and difficulty; and so long as any doubt remains on this subject, I' think it best to abstain from such changes of names, of which there have already been but too many; and even if a new name were expedient for the oyxmuriatic acid, I should think that of chlorine, as a radical, to have been ill chosen, because its indication of a.
