Originally available from Mutoscope penny arcade vending machines, images of glamourous pin-ups skyrocketed in popularity during the Second World War. Condition: Very Good. Moran, Earl and others (illustrator). Hardcover, 160 pages. This book will beguile a new generation with flirtatious representations of femininity from the 1940s and 50s. Illustrations of irresistible pinup models bring teasing frivolity to a range of everyday situations, organized thematically from morning to evening. Gil Elvgren, Earl Moran, Al Buell, Edward d?Ancona, and Earl Christie were master illustrators of the pin-up genre. From sun-kissed beauties at the beach to ski bunnies hitting the slopes, bedside nurses ready to take your temperature to scantily clad runaways, rakish shipmates to not-so-conscientious secretaries, these smiling cuties are ready for fun. The penny arcade trading cards originally viewed on a peep-show style reel and reproduced here as detachable illustrations feature both established pin-up artists and those waiting to be rediscovered. Each illustration is accompanied by a humorous and memorable celebrity quote. Record # 353173.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Moran, Earl; Elvgren, Gil; Mozert, Zoe (illustrator). First Edition. St. Paul, MN: Brown & Bigelow, circa 1940's. Earl Moran, Gil Elvgren, Zoe Mozert (artists). Six vintage mutoscope cards, 5.25" x 3.25"; very, very near fine. Only sporadic magnifying-glass level wear; sharp, square, centered and brightly colored. See scan. The mutoscope cards of the forties were not actually intended for use on mutoscopes, which were machines from a much earlier era (invented in 1895) which provided "peep show" simulated motion picture entertainment via a process which rapidly flipped individual cards. The forties mutoscope cards, on the other hand, were "pin-up" art cards intended for individual collecting - something World War II G.I.s did avidly. With artwork by now-legendary "Good Girl" pin-up artists such as Earl Moran, Gil Elvgren, Zoe Mozert (probably the most famous female pin-up artist) and others, they've recently experienced a rather rapid revivial in collector interest. Besides Brown and Bigelow, Louis F. Dow and International Mutoscope Reel Company produced these exemplary examples of original Americana. There were 280 named cards in six series sets ("Glamor Girls" [32 cards], "Artist's Pin-up Girls" [64 cards], "Yankee Doodle Girls" [32 cards], "Follies" [32 cards], "All-American Girls" [32 cards] and "Hot'Cha Girls" [64 cards], but rare variations on some of the cards, still being discovered, add to the "completist" collector's list. The cards range from somewhat common to really quite rare. Cards included here are: "Miss-Placed Confidence" (Gil Elvgren, from the "All-American Girls" series, rated "Vary Rare"); "Thumb Fun, Eh, Kid?" (Earl Moran, "Artist Pin-up Girls" Series); "That's The Last Straw" (Zoe Mozert, "Artist Pin-up Girls" Series); "Inflation Control (Earl Moran, "Artist Pin-up Girls" Series); "Don't Try Any Pincer Movements On Me"; (Earl Moran, "Artist Pin-up Girls" Series); and "Visibility Perfect" (Earl Moran, "Artist Pin-up Girls" Series). Handsome, sharp, bright all around, but the extraordinarily scarce Elvgren card is the showpiece. Lsmeph.

Vintage ink blotter featuring colorful Moran pinup art of Marilyn Monroe before her blonde hair, in the artist's most popular rendition of the actress model. Blotters were produced for uses as mail-order advertisement and shop decor, but mainly used during the era of fountain pens (devices that bled ink), placed behind the parchment to absorb the excess ink and keep safe surfaces beneath. The ephemera as a whole is commonly seen, but one featuring Monroe is very scarce. Moran's name and B&B copyright both clearly visible. Calumet Market was a food supply company that began as a fishery in Chicago and now are known as a "smokehouse" take-out restaurant. About 3.75 x 9 inches, card stock, printed recto, plain blue verso, 2 thin pink R/L borders. Very Good Plus overall, faint foxing, rubbing, toning, a few tiny bumps and surface tears at the edges, but overall crisp and attractive!
