National Geographic is the official magazine of the National Geographic Society. It has been published continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published on September 22, 1888, nine months after the Society was founded. Starting with its January 1905 publication of several full-page pictures of Tibet in 1900-1901, the magazine changed from being a text-oriented publication closer to a scientific journal to featuring extensive pictorial content, and became well known for this style. John Hyde was the first editor. This issue includes: Infantrymen--The Fighters of War by W. H. Wilbur with 22 Illustrations; Mindanao, on the Road to Tokyo by Frederick Simpich with 26 Illustrations and Map; Camera Cruising in the Philippines with 12 Natural Color Photographs, Coffee is King in El Salvador by Luis Marden and David Duncan with 22 Illustrations and Map and 27 Natural Color Photographs; Charting a World at Ware by William H. Nicholas with 24 Illustrations.William Hale Wilbur (September 24, 1888 - December 27, 1979) was a United States Army officer and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration-the Medal of Honor-for his actions in World War II. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1912 and joined the Army from his birth city of Palmer, Massachusetts. He also attended the French military academy École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr as a classmate of Charles de Gaulle and saw combat in World War I. He commanded the 60th Infantry Regiment from 1941 to 1942.Frederick Simpich was an American writer known for his work in diplomacy, newspaper work, literary work, and as Assistant Editor of the National Geographic Society from 1931 to 1949. During his time in the society, he wrote more articles for the magazine than anyone else before or after his time, over eighty articles from 1914 to 1949. He was known for traveling around the world whilst writing articles for papers and magazines, concluding with his 35-year stay in the Society.Luis Marden (born Annibale Luigi Paragallo) (January 25, 1913 - March 3, 2003) was an American photographer, explorer, writer, filmmaker, diver, navigator, and linguist who worked for National Geographic Magazine. He worked as a photographer and reporter before serving as chief of the National Geographic foreign editorial staff. He was a pioneer in the use of color photography, both on land and underwater, and also made many discoveries in the world of science. His polymathic nature has led many to consider him the epitome of the "National Geographic man," the old-time adventurer who trekked to the edges of the globe in search of material for the magazine's longer articles. Though he had officially retired in 1976, Marden continued to write occasional stories long after. He wrote more than 60 articles for the magazine.David Douglas Duncan (born January 23, 1916) is an American photojournalist who is best known for his dramatic combat photographs. After college, Duncan began to freelance, selling his work to journals such as The Kansas City Star, Life and the National Geographic Magazine. After Pearl Harbor Duncan joined the Marine Corps, earned an officer's commission, and became a combat photographer. After brief postings in California and Hawaii, he was sent to the South Pacific on assignment when the United States entered.
