24mo in 8s, (94mm), [8p. publisher's adverts],viii,71p. engraved frontispiece portrait, and vignette title (the latter dated 1824). Original red morocco grain silken cloth, worn at the backstrip and edges, gilt lettered on leather back-label, green paper endleaves, all edges gilt, Litchfield bookseller's ticket. Printed in Glasgow by Hutchison and Brockman. Rare, Copac locates only the Cambridge copy of this edition. The advertisements that precede the text list a number of Jones' series of English classics, of this contribution to the 'Diamond poets' series, the publisher claims that they are the 'smallest ever printed. Uniting correctness, beautiful typography, portability, the greatest economy, &c.' This copy's attraction is enhanced by retaining the original binding which, though worn, is an interesting example of an early publisher's cloth edition binding. 'The Minstrel, a poem in Spenserian stanza, was begun in 1766, probably as a lighthearted, satirical work. In the spring of 1768 Beattie was inspired to continue it as his own poetic autobiography. It describes the childhood of Edwin, a shepherd boy brought up in solitary mountainous country, and his imaginative response to nature. In less than three months Beattie wrote most of the first book of The Minstrel, and began the second. The completion of the second book, however, took more than five years; an intended third book was never written. The poetic growth of Edwin was an inspiration to several generations of poets, most particularly to the Romantics, and this work had an important formative influence on William Wordsworth, who greatly admired it.' Three pages, 12mo, bifolium, fold marks, very good condition. "If you will let me know what Numbers you require of the Gothic Ornaments {his work first published in 1838] I will endeavour to let you have them. It is very probable that you would not get them at my publishers as there being so little demand for the work now in Numbers we bind them all up as far as we can- But if you will let me know what you require I will send them to you and charge you only [underlined] 2/6 per Number. | I have made up your drawing of Bitton tower, but have taken care of it, and will return it the first opportunity- | I am much obliged for your kind invitation and will take care to avail myself of it should I be called into Devonshire but I have not been any where near there since the last time I was at Exeter Cathedral- | I am building a mansion at Ashwick near Marshfield which I believe is not far from Bitton." Hardcover. Condition: As New. First Edition. 8 vo. 335 pp., [8], Arabic text, [5, introduction in Italian], contemporary quarter calf, title printed within borders, scattered foxing throughout. This work by Saint Alphonse de Liguori (1696-1787), was written in Italian and published in 1758. It was translated into Arabic by the Archbishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Aleppo Maksimus ibn Jirjis Mazlum. Alfonso Liguori (1696-1781) was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, scholastic philosopher and theologian. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists). As a prolific writer, he published nine editions of his Moral Theology in his lifetime, in addition to other devotional and ascetic works and letters. This work Apparecchio Alla Morte is an ascetic and classical work of Christian spirituality written in 1768. The book can be considered a development of the Massime Eterne previously written by the same author. It was widely popular within the Catholic Church and was translated into several languages including Arabic.

Entirely uncut in contemporary paper boards, ms title on spine, spine darkened, slight wear and soiling. Occasional insiginificant spots and stains, but an attractive copy. In Milano, appresso di Giovann' Antonio de gli Antonij, 1554 (but probably Lucca, c. 1740). 8vo. [ii] + x pp. + ff. [3], 4-228. Woodcut printer's device on title and final leaf. The date of publication is false, supported by archaic typography, and according to Brunet the book was actually printed at Lucca c. 1740. The first edition of the book appeared only in 1558, which the forgery purports to predate by four years, creating a spurious first edition. Little is known of the author, who was active in the late 14th century. This collection of prose tales ("The Dunce") was very popular; the first story on the fourth day, describing a Jewish money lender demanding a pound of flesh from his Christian debtor, is believed to be the basis of Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice.
