Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. Original German lyrics by Gerhard Ebeler; English lyrics by Hal Cotton; music credited to Hans Otten and Ken Griffin. The copyright statement identifies this as the 1948 Biltmore Music Corporation American publication, based on the earlier German composition Du Kannst Nicht Treu Sein, copyrighte…d 1935. The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History holds this same Biltmore issue - down to the brown geometric cover and inset Griffin portrait - and dates it to 1948. Mississippi State University's Templeton Sheet Music Collection likewise catalogs the edition as a six-page 1948 Biltmore score for piano and voice. This is a particularly good artifact of the song's unusual transatlantic history. Du kannst nicht treu sein originated in Germany with lyrics by Gerhard Ebeler and music by Hans Otten and was associated with the 1936 German film of the same title; Germany's Filmportal confirms Otten's song music and Ebeler's lyrics. More than a decade later, Hal Cotton's English adaptation became an American popular-music phenomenon. The cover itself documents how heavily recorded the song was, advertising versions by Jerry Wayne/Ken Griffin, Dick Haymes, The Sportsmen, Marlin Sisters, Ziggy Lane, Whistling Jitterettes, Norman Pipes Emmett, Fred Sayles, Vera Lynn, Russ Brooks, Wilson, and Ronnie Deauville. Griffin's photograph receives center stage because his organ performance was central to the American success of the song. Condition: Very Good. Complete example with sound overall presentation and a strong, unfaded Ken Griffin cover image. Moderate edge and corner wear, light creasing and age toning, small edge tears/nicks, and some handling wear. Most significant are an old surface abrasion/loss near the upper center of the front cover and a penciled former-owner name ("Nancy Whitman") across the title area. Interior music is clean and readily legible with moderate toning. Rear cover has light edge wear and a small penciled notation at upper left. These flaws are visible but do not seriously compromise display value. The rear cover advertises "Frankie Carle's New Sensational Piano Solo - Sunrise Boogie," by Frankie Carle and Al Avola, also copyright 1948. That makes the entire wrapper a compact snapshot of what publishers were promoting during the immediate postwar boogie/pop crossover. Ken Griffin (1909-1956) became one of the best-known popular organists of the postwar era, and You Can't Be True, Dear was his signature breakthrough. The song generated numerous competing recordings in 1948; contemporary-chart compilations document charting versions by Griffin, Vera Lynn, The Sportsmen, Dick Haymes and others. That unusually broad recording history helps explain why Biltmore devoted an entire box on the cover to listing performers who had recorded the number.
