Handel composed this Te Deum to celebrate this victory. Of Handel's five Te Deum compositions, the Dettingen Te Deum is the best known alongside the Utrecht Te Deum. According to tradition, this hymn of praise goes back to St Augustine and Ambrose of Milan (4th century), who were seized by the Holy Spirit. As in his other Te Deum compositions, Handel also set the Ambrosian hymn of praise to music here.In der Schlacht bei Dettingen am Main siegte 1743 das à sterreichisch-britische Militär über die franzà sischen Truppen. Anlässlich der Feierlichkeiten über diesen Sieg komponierte Händel dieses Te Deum. Von fünf Te-Deum-Kompositionen Händels ist das Dettinger neben dem Utrechter Te Deum am bekanntesten. Dieser Lobgesang geht der �berlieferung nach auf den vom Heiligen Geist ergriffenen Augustinus und Ambrosius von Mailand (4. Jh.) zurück. Wie in seinen anderen Te-Deum-Kompositionen vertonte Händel auch hier den Ambrosianischen Lobgesang.

The reworking concerns both the instrumentation as well as changes in the sequence of movements. The textual basis is the biblical account of the evangelist John (John 18 and 19) with the insertions from the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 26:75 and 27, 51-52). The hymns come from the current repertoire of the Bach's time and deviate only in a few cases from the original form.
