IMPORTANT AND BEAUTIFUL FIRST EDITION FROM JOHN LANE THE BODLEY HEAD AND THE PRESS AT OXFORD. Beautifully printed and bound, with John Johnson's fine press work. The Book of Sirach, also known as The Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach, The Wisdom of Jesus son of Eleazar, or Ecclesiasticus is a Jewish literary work originally written in Biblical Hebrew. The longest extant wisdom book from antiquity, it consists of ethical teachings, written by Yeshua ben Eleazar ben Sira (Ben Sira), a Hellenistic Jewish scribe of the Second Temple period.[ The text was written sometime between 196 and 175 BCE, and Ben Sira's grandson translated the text into Koine Greek and added a prologue sometime around 117 BCE. The prologue is generally considered to be the earliest witness to a tripartite canon of the books of the Hebrew Bible. The fact that the text and its prologue can be so precisely dated has profound implications for the development of the Hebrew Bible canon. Although the Book of Sirach is not included in the Hebrew Bible, and therefore not considered scripture in Judaism, it is included in the Septuagint and the Old Testament of the Catholic and Orthodox churches. In the Protestant traditions, historically, and still in continuation today in Lutheranism and Anglicanism, the Book of Sirach is an intertestamental text found in the Apocrypha, though it is regarded as noncanonical. This John Lane Bodley Head edition is very readable, decorated beautifully and presented handsomely. Violet Ella Evelyn Brunton (October 1878 1951), also known as Victor du Lac, was an English sculptor, painter, and illustrator. She was educated at the the Royal College of Art in London. During the 1920s, Brunton contributed illustrations to a number of books, including two volumes of fairy tales, edited by Romer Wilson, the Ecclesiasticus as presented here, and a number of other works. In her oil paintings, she tended towards classical and mythological subjects. She exhibited work at the Royal Academy, the Royal Glasgow Institute, the Royal Society of Miniature Painters (to which she was elected in 1925), and elsewhere. Charles Lewis Hind (18621927) was a British journalist, writer, editor, art critic and art historian. He served as the deputy editor of The Art Journal (188792) and the Pall Mall Budget. In 1893, he co-founded The Studio: An Illustrated Magazine of Fine and Applied Art. Three years later, Hind became the editor of The Academy and, after it merged with Literature, he continued with the editorship of The Academy and Literature, retiring in 1903.

Single leaf from a papyrus codex, 180 x 112 mm. Brown ink in large heavy round uncials. Verso 16 lines across the fibres; recto 16 lines along the fibres, one line lost. Text begins on the verso and continues on the recto. Preserved between modern supports and stored in a custom brown cloth case. The first papyrus of this text,…and the last biblical Oxyrhynchus papyrus still in private hands: a leaf from a papyrus codex transmitting Ecclesiasticus I, 1-9, and thus an early witness to the Greek text of the Wisdom of Jesus ben Sira in the form that remained the chief textual authority for centuries. - Written in large heavy round uncials and datable on palaeographical grounds to the sixth century, the fragment preserves a carefully laid-out biblical text with projecting verse openings, high stops at line ends, and the usual contractions, famously beginning with the words, "All wisdom cometh from the Lord, and is with Him for ever. Who can number the sand of the sea, and the drops of rain, and the days of eternity? Who can find out the height of heaven, and the breadth of the earth, and the deep, and wisdom?" Verse 7 is omitted, as in the chief uncial manuscripts. The codex form is itself significant: the text begins on the verso and continues on the recto, preserving the material habits of late antique Christian book culture at the moment when papyrus codices still served as principal vehicles of scriptural transmission in Egypt. - Recovered from the Oxyrhynchus corpus and published as P. Oxy. XIII.1595, this leaf belongs to the great stream of excavated evidence that transformed the textual history of the Bible. The Greek version of Ecclesiasticus long stood as the prevailing source for the work, and fragments of such antiquity remain defining survivals for the reconstruction of its earliest circulation. The page number is not preserved, so it remains uncertain whether this was the opening leaf of the codex or only of a section. A note at the foot of the recto may refer to an omission. - Although Ecclesiasticus is not part of the Hebrew Bible, it is included in the Septuagint and the Old Testament of the Catholic Church as well as of the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches. In the Protestant tradition, is it found in the Apocrypha. - A highly uncommon survival with distinguished institutional provenance, de-accessioned only in 2013 from the Pacific School of Religion. - Surface wear, losses and lacunae as visible, including one lost line on the recto; edges frayed and irregular, with injuries affecting the discernibility of some high stops. Overall well preserved for a papyrus codex leaf of this date. - 1) Egypt Exploration Society. - 2) Palestine Institute Museum, Pacific School of Religion, Badé Museum of Biblical Archaeology, Berkeley, California (Pap. 1). - 3) De-accessioned in 2013 as part of the sale of the Howell Collection of Bibles and other theological rarities. - 4) John Windle, San Francisco. - 5) European private collection. - P. Oxy. XIII.1595. G. Cavallo, Ricerche sulla maiuscola biblica (1967), pl. 77. Cf. Schubart, Pap. Graec. Berol. 44a. [Box/Oesterley, eds.], The Book of Sirach, in: Charles, Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament (Oxford, 1913) I, 268ff., at p. 317f.

8vo (104 x 156 mm). 98 ff. Arabic manuscript on paper. Black naskh script with markers and titles in red. Contemporary full morocco ruled and stamped in blind. The Book of Sirach: a manuscript copy of this Hellenistic Jewish work, written not in Hebrew, but in Arabic. Originally composed in the 2nd century BCE, the Book of Sirac…h had a marked influence on later Jewish and Christian doctrine, though it is only considered canonical by some Christians (Catholics, for example, include it in the canon, while churches rooted in the Reformation do not). It was first translated into Koine Greek by the author's grandson, but later Arabic translations such as this manuscript also circulated among Arabic-speaking Jews and Christians. The present manuscript is a wonderful example of exactly this type of cross-cultural tradition. - In the preamble of the manuscript, the scribe states that his book contains the first twenty chapters (roughly the first half) of the Book of Sirach. The manuscript is complete, as the scribe intended (the 20th chapter is titled "the last"), and covers the major themes of the work, including Creation, death, sin, social justice, and the role of women. - Covers a touch rubbed; ownership marks and notes on endpapers, and one chipped leaf (no loss to text). In good condition.
