Ku nzelsau, Swiridoff / Museum Wu rth, [2024]. 131 pp. Col. ills. Hardcover (Beige cloth, white title), d./j.Anthony Caro and Eduardo Chillida are among the most important sculptors of the 20th century. Their sculptures are represented in renowned collections and museums worldwide and have long enriched the Würth Collection. In 2024, both artists would have turned 100. The Museum Würth is taking this opportunity to showcase their respective artistic work through an exhibition of around 70 selected sculptures and wall installations. With their sculptures, each bearing their own distinct artistic signature, Caro and Chillida transcended existing boundaries. Both artists are considered representatives of abstract sculpture and made significant contributions to the development of modern sculpture. Their sculptures are often expansive, indeed, they practically occupy the space. Through their intensive engagement with space, both artists have left their mark on numerous sites throughout Europe. Consider, for example, Caro's imposing sculpture ensemble Chapel of Light in Bourbourg, France, and the monumental installation The Last Judgement (Würth Collection), which has already been exhibited in numerous locations, or Chillida's Peine del viento in his hometown of San Sebastián, as well as the striking sculpture Berlin in front of the Federal Chancellery in the German capital. Even in smaller formats, both artists impress with the diversity of their materials. These range from fireclay, granite, and stoneware to steel, brass, iron, concrete, and wood. Drawings, prints, and books presented at the Museum Würth further illuminate the similarities and differences between the two sculptors, who continually grappled with questions of form, material, and theme in sculpture.
