Plot developments include the following: Charlie tells Lou that he and his wife Marion have decided to separate; Mrs. Pynchon calls in a fire story from a riding stable; Rossi interviews firefighters and frightened residents as entire neighborhoods are evacuated and houses are consumed in minutes; Charlie learns that fires have spread into his neighborhood and rushes home to check on Marion; Charlie works to save his house despite the warnings of the firefighters; Billie tries politely to keep her visiting father out of her hair as she covers the disaster from the city room; Animal learns he is suspected of arson by a fire department investigator; and Charlie and Marion make a decision about their relationship. At the dawn of the railway age in 1831 he famously rode 200 miles in less than nine hours. It was a time when men were gentlemen and horses were transportation.
