He worked as a clown during the "Golden Age" of the circus and was a protege of P.T. Barnum. Eddie Eagan (1897-1967) holds the unique distinction of being the only athlete in history to win gold medals at both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games in different sports. He achieved this feat as a light-heavyweight boxer at the 1920 Antwerp Summer Games and as a member of the four-man bobsled team at the 1932 Lake Placid Winter Games.
