"Nancy Edell started making hooked rugs after moving to Nova Scotia in 1980, and is justly celebrated for her skill and inventiveness in this medium. Her rugs have been included in a range of national and international exhibitions over the past seventeen years, and she recently completed an artist's residency in a museum in Ashington (an ex-coalmining centre in Northern England) in conjunction with an exhibition of contemporary rag rugs that eventually toured across England. To describe Edell solely as a textile artist, however, would be misleading. The rugs represent one part of a long-dedicated practice that has included animation, printmaking, drawing, painting and mixed media works. In fact, Edell seldom hooks a 'stand-alone' rug these days. In most of her recent works the hooked sections an incorporated into multi-panelled structures in such a way that their unique textures play an equal part with the painted and gouged surfaces." - Susan Gibson Garvey.
