Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. George Cruikshank (illustrator). 1st Edition. Both volumes in very good condition. Half calf binding with marbled boards. Both volumes have spotting to preliminaries and rear end papers. Both have at some point been expertly re-backed with gilt titling and date 1838 to spine. In consequence of this repair, whilst there is general edge-wear the two volumes are exceptionally firm and present extremely well. The original leather has been incorporated wherever possible.

Frontis. is a portrait engraving of Grimaldi. 256 Pages. Illustrated with B&W Drawings, Full Page, by Cruikshank. Blue Cloth Cover with blind stamped decoration to front and gilt lettering and decoration to spine. Some wear around edges of cover and a small closed tear (1/2" long) at bottom edge of spine. A few spots of foxing to some pages. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Cloth. Condition: Poor. No Jacket. Cruikshank, George (illustrator). Imperfect, lacks plates - Part I, p. 62, Part II, p.1, plate to p.37. Rubbed and bumped, spine sunned, gutters cracked, odd patch of foxing, else pp generally clean and tidy. Size: 12mo.

Very Good, Bartlett's Circulating Library bookplate front pastedown; calf rubbed, corners showing, scattered foxing. Originally issued as part of the five-volume First American edition.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 2nd Edition. This is an early copy of the "Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi" edited by Charles Dickens (as "BOZ"). 1838 2nd American edition, 2nd state; William H. Colyer; New York. Complete in one volume. With an early frontispiece lithograph of Grimaldi by Nathaniel Currier (of "Currier and Ives" notoriety) with tissue guard. Joseph Grimaldi was an English actor, comedian and dancer who became the most popular English entertainer of the Regency era. The "Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi" was edited by a young Charles Dickens only two years after the publication of his first major literary work, "The Pickwick Papers." The text presented to Dickens was a long, discursive manuscript which he edited and rewrote heavily. He also wrote the "Introductory Chapter," and possibly the "Concluding Chapter" as well. This 2nd American edition copy was published the same year as 1st American edition (which was originally published in 2 volumes). Condition: Light, dime-sized stain on the front cover. Portions of the top paper are missing in some areas on the covers. Wear along the board edges. The label on the spine is missing. Tight binding with no loose pages. Mild foxing to the pages; no writing found; the first 2 blank end papers have a tiny piece missing at the outer edge.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, complete in two volumes. A very good set in variant publisher's dark green cloth with gilt decorations to spine, some rubbing to the joints, but overall a solid set. Armorial bookplates to front pastedown and front end paper, some browning to a few places in the text, complete with the 13 plates, engraved by Cruiksank, most of the plates have the tissue guards intact, first issue with the last plate is without the grotesque border.
