Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. EVEREST THE WEST RIDGE SIERRA CLUB EXHIBIT FORMAT SERIES NO. 12 1965 1st. I have this memory of reading once that the Sierra Club used a very high quality photo printing process in some of their early large books before switching to something more common and mundane. I have a feeling that the book I am listing here, is one of those early high quality photo books. I am sure that the real collectors will know what I am talking about. For your consideration, I am pleased to offer: Everest, the West Ridge, a large book of photographs from the American Mount Everest Expedition and by its Leader, Norman G. Dyhrenfurth. The photographs of which there are many, are spectacular, full-page, high-gloss images almost ethereal in their beauty. Their super high gloss, however, makes them difficult to photograph without glare, for which I extend my apologies. This book was written by Thomas F. Hornbein and edited by David Brower, the legendary Executive Director of the Sierra Club. This very large hard cover book (10 ½ x 13 ¾ inches, 201 pages plus a map of the local route) is No. 12 of the Sierra Club Exhibit Format Series, dated 1965 and the First Edition (probably even the First Printing). The book is bound in a heavy weave gray cloth with bold gilt decorations and titles on cover and spine. It is protected by a heavy-duty pictorial dust jacket which is printed on the reverse with promotional material, text and photos, for the Sierra Club. The few photos of this listing will scarcely do justice to the quality of the photos in this book. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket, however, has taken a beating and been moderately soiled over the years, and is inexpertly repaired with taped edges on the reverse. The hard covers are clean and barely bumped but showing some very light darkening along the gutter and lower edge, doubtless from normal handling. Inside, there is a former owner s inked signature, slightly smudged, on the first blank page. I also noted some tiny splashes of blue ink on the last blank page and the map, nothing too extreme. There is a bookseller s label on the rear endpaper but both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Hard Cover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Eliot Porter (illustrator). First Edition. Sumptuous photography book, with the photographs printed on laquered Kromekote "to achieve maximum brilliance and fidelity", recording the spectacular gorge in remote Utah carved by the Colorado River, and flooded by the building of a dam in 1963; the book is a remembrance and a warning. Its prehistoric sites hurriedly studied before the dam was built, and visited by numerous conservationists before its flooding (including Edward Abbey, who wrote about his trip 'down the river' in Desert Solitaire), the canyon remains a focal point of environmentalists, with renewed interest now that submerged areas are re-emerging under historic drought conditions. Oversized hardcover in jacket, as pictured; first edition (first printing), listing no later printings. Light wear to book; bookplate on flyleaf, cockling the page; hinges tender; jacket shows some rubbing & chipping, short tears; $20 price Until 6-1-63 remains. Text clean; 170 pages, references, species list, 72 color plates. A surcharge for expedited or international shipping of this oversize book may be required; please inquire for an accurate quote. Size: 10½ " by 14".
