Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Original edition. [iv], 448pp (continuously numbered), with six frontis plates and several head- and tail-pieces in line. After the general title page, which has some soiling, the contents are clean and in very good order, with offsetting to a few pages. Each month's edition begins with an article on a particular sportsman, and is preceded by an actual portrait photograph of the gentleman (they are all men) mounted as a frontis, with his autograph reproduced below. The September portrait is missing from this copy. Many interesting articles on subjects such as cycling, lacrosse, cricket (including 'Modern Batting' by WG Grace), modern football (Association and Rugby), moorland shooting, pike fishing, athletics, and tennis, with extensive records of contemporary sporting events, as well as sections listing new Inventions and Appliances - many of which pertain to velocipedes. There is also some fiction. In a new binding of brown cloth, spine ruled and labelled gilt with a red lettering-piece. [Publication may have ceased after the 8th issue - vide Copac]. A treasury. Very scarce.
