The Victorians though her flowery sentences, wherein many words did the service of one, 'nauseating.' To us they are simply funny, as they were to her contemporaries. In that respect, as in certain others, the eighteenth and twentieth centuries clasp hands across the chasm in which the Victorians struck moral attitudes and breathed moral prejudices. Anna Seward was a blue-stocking, a highbrow, the centre of an intellectual coterie, and she has suffered the invaraible fate of such. She is partially restored in this volume, not primarily as an object of laughter, nor as a quaint 'period' figure for the delectation of her highbrow successors, but because she possessed two virtues seldom seen in the men and women who found coteries and form cliques: she was an honest and courageous human being. 316 pp. ( We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
