Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Poe's poem is published here in its original 10-stanza form. (Poe's literary executor Rufus Wilmot Griswold was the first to print "Ulalume" without its final stanza, now the standard version.) This bound volume, containing six issues of the monthly magazine, is complete and easily read, tissue guards remain in place over the B&W frontispiece portraits which begin many of the monthly issues, to include the Hon. Geo. Evans, U.S. Senator from Maine, Pope Pius IX, the Hon. John Minor Botts, M.C. from Va., etc. "Ulalume" occupies pp. 599-600 of the December issue, which pages are clear and easily read. HOWEVER, this bound volume is in "fair" condition only, and is a good candidate for re-binding. The marbled paper which covers the boards remains largely present to the front board, but almost entirely torn away from the rear board. There is some scattered foxing, mostly to the margins, of the first 300 pp., and some water stains, primarily to blank rectos of the frontispiece portraits, which are printed on a heavier stock. (Pp. 302 through 659 -- the second half of the text block, to incude "Ulalume," are blessedly free of foxing.) If there were originally paper labels to the spine, they are gone. And while the boards are present, the front free endpaper has separated and is laid in, while the front board is currently so tenuously attached that for all practical purposes it must be considered to be detached. Nameplate of John S. Stubbs to the front pastedown. This volume also features the lengthy and famously brutal review of Herman Melville's "Omoo" by George Washington Peck, who calls that book (as well as Melville's "Typee") "repellent." Totals 659 numbered pp., here reduced from $335.
