Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 'The Scottish Classics'. What separates this book from the others for sale is the signed handwritten note from the editor on the first front end paper. The gist of the note is in reference to page 50 and the 'Tantonie bell'. He writes that he has subsequently seen pictures showing Anthony of Egypt 'carrying a small bell and must retract the sweeping statement about former editors, I.A. Ross'. Also at the bottom of page 62 he has handwritten something in reference to a footnote (Priories in Kinross and Aryshire). It looks like 'the friars belonged to the (?) Order. I.R.'. The 'I.R.' are his initials. The name of the Order is fairly legible and will be identifiable by anybody who has a working knowledge of the subject. There is also a penciled name at the top right-hand corner of the first front end paper (Hawkins). Presumably he was the previous owner of the book and the person that Mr. Ross was addressing in these two notes. There is no other extraneous writing in the book, nothing other than what I have already referenced. Interestingly, I was unable to find another signed copy of this or any other book that Iain Ross wrote or edited. I don't see a publishing date in this book. The Preface is dated September 1939. A number of sellers are stating that their book was published in 1957. That may be the case here as well. I really don't know. I don't see any reference to 1957 inside my book. On to condition: you can see the covers in the photographs provided. I don't think I need to elaborate much. They're in very nice condition. They have little to no wear. The book is square and straight. I found three instances where there is a slight amount of space between two opposing pages of text, but there's absolutely no looseness to be found anywhere in the book. There are no cracks between the covers and end papers. The book is solidly bound. There is a little bit of light age spotting on the inside covers and end papers. There isn't any of this to be found anywhere else in the book. An old ticket stub (I've left it there) has left its shadow on two opposing pages. I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners on the pages. There aren't any markings. There aren't any attachments. And the pages are very clean. 'The Gude and Godlie Ballatis is a collection of religious lyrics from the early years of the Scottish Reformation. It was a highly popular, if controversial, volume, was often reprinted, and is considered one of the most important literary works of vernacular Scots from the period. It contains translations of a number of Psalms, but most of the contents consist of shorter songs and ballads, many of which have been adapted from a secular to a spiritual use.'.
