Seller: S. Howlett-West Books (Member ABAA), Modesto, CA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. B&W Illustrations; Two Volume Set. Both volumes have been rebound by a previous owner in a vernacular binding. The books are in Good condition and were likely issued without dust jackets. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have rubbing, bumping and wear. The majority of the text pages are in generally clean bright condition. It appears the front endpaper is missing and the frontispiece has been reversed and is now being used as the front endpaper. There are full sized illustrations and maps throughout. Laid in are several family records and documents (which have, unfortunately, been jerryrig laminated, again by the former owner). "The Cottage Bible And Family Expositor: Containing The Old And New Testaments, With Practical Expositions And Explanatory Notes was an 1824 study Bible, compiled by Thomas Williams (1755 1839). The Cottage Bible printed text deemed unsuitable for family reading in smaller type, and exchanged "some phrases also exceptionable to females" for others "more suitable to the present state of our language and of society". The Quarterly Theological Review and Ecclesiastical Record objected to this as a "violation of the purity of the sacred text". The American edition of 1833 printed the whole text in uniform type. Hardcover. Complete in 2 Vols. 7 x 10.5in. 1440pp. Profusely "embellished with maps and engravings." Bound in leather of the period with gilt titling and ruling. Both volumes are in VERY GOOD condition showing the extremities well shelf rubbed, some scuffing of the boards and spines, text-block with extremely light scattered foxing confined mostly to the tissue guards of various plates and the margins of some plates, a single sentence has been lightly underlined on the first page, otherwise the bindings are strong and tight, the texts are unmarked, and the boards remain distinct.
