Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion at One Hundred Years. Edited by Samuel E. Karff. Published by Hebrew Union College Press, Cincinnati, 1976. First Edition. Red cloth boards with black-and-gilt title panels; octavo; xxii + 498 pages; illustrated with historical photographs; original dust jacket. A substantial centennial volume issued to commemorate the first hundred years (1875-1975) of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, the flagship seminary of the Reform movement in the United States. Part One, written by noted historian Michael A. Meyer, offers a documented institutional history from Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise's founding vision through the twentieth century's major expansions, intellectual developments, and leadership transitions. Part Two gathers five essays by prominent HUC-JIR scholars' Sheldon Blank, Lewis M. Barth, Martin A. Cohen, Lou H. Silberman, and Ezra Spicehandler, surveying the faculty's contributions to Bible, rabbinics, theology/philosophy, history, Hebrew, and literature. With final reflective essay, Into the Second Century, by President Alfred Gottschalk. Condition (Book: Near Fine). Clean and bright red cloth; gilt sharp; binding tight and square with no markings to text; pages crisp. Only a faint superficial scratch to the front board prevents a Fine grade. Condition (Dust Jacket: Good). Intact and unclipped; displays generalized toning, edgewear, a noticeable short closed tear with associated crease to the front panel, and small chips at crown/edges. Edition/Printing Determination: Copyright page states '© 1976 by the Hebrew Union College Press,' with no additional printing statements or number line - standard practice for the Press.
