The election held in May 2013 paved the way for the first democratic transition, electing Nawaz Sharif as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. The same year, General Pervez Kayani was succeeded by General Raheel Sharif as the Army Chief of Pakistan and T. Hussain Jillani succeeded Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry as the Chief Justice of Pakistan. These developments with their cascading effects created an interest among scholars and policymakers across the world, particularly in India, in the direction Pakistan is moving. In 2013, the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) constituted 'Core Group on Pakistan' (CGP) to develop deeper understanding of critical issues in Pakistan, which were vital for India`s interests. The objective of the CGP was to maximize policy options and enhance public awareness about relevant issues in Pakistan. The book titled `Insights into Evolution of Contemporary Pakistan` is the outcome of serious deliberations among well known scholars, diplomats and policymakers at meetings (total eight meetings from 21 June 2013 to 13 November 2014) of the CGP. Papers presented in these Core Group meetings have been thoroughly reviewed before publication and the editors acknowledge with gratitude these insightful contributions.

The focus of the book is the wide stretch of water- and sea-ways connecting the coasts of Bengal and Sri Lanka to the coast of Vietnam. The authors address three broad issues through an interdisciplinary perspective. The first relates to boat-building traditions and the communities who traversed these waters. The challenge is to use the ethnographic present and mobility of the fishing and sailing groups for an understanding of the history of the sea and the extent to which knowledge of the waters was vital to the construction of identity of a maritime society. Linked to this movement across the waters, are the narratives of trans-locality inherent in memories of groups in the region. Long-distance pilgrimage and devotional networks have been consistent features of the cultural life of South and Southeast Asia. A third issue relates to European intervention, starting with the Portuguese and the Dutch. The engagement of the English East India Company with the countries of the Bay of Bengal was of a different order from that of its predecessors, as the Company sought to establish a maritime empire. The eighteenth century thus, raised a different set of issues with the colonization of large parts of South and Southeast Asia. How did notions of a maritime empire impact the study of the regions past? It is these themes that we address in the volume thereby shifting the focus from chronological markers and national histories to communities who crossed the waters and the changes that these underwent in time.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. The term 'Indo-Pacific' is being used increasingly in the global strategic/geo-political discourse in recent years. The rise of China as an economic giant and a rising military power has led to the consequent shift of international politics and relations to Asia as the fulcrum. It has turned the whole region of Indo-Pacific as one security complex. Countries that are part of the region but also countries that are adjacent or outside the region, but also the countries adjoining the oceans look for a mechanism in accordance with a rule-based order. International law that would protect the rights of the nations to pursue global commons was emphasized. This timely volume presents a collection of articles by leading scholars on the subject from the region. It addresses the fault lines of both traditional and non-traditional security issues. Military modernization, especially of the naval forces of a number of powers, national ambitions of power projection and plans to build ports in strategic locations are exacerbating insecurity and greater arms race. It also poses the question, whether the Indo-Pacific region will become a theatre of tension and instability, or a contributor to peace and prosperity for the larger populations that reside herein.

Essays in Medieval Indian Economic History is part of a three-volume set, comprising representative articles of Indian History Congress Proceedings (1935-85). In their analysis of the economic history of India during the thirteenth-eighteenth centuries, the essays in this volume delineate a shift from the studies of policies to the working of the revenue system, and its impact on the lives of the Indian people. Further, they highlight patterns and trends of agricultural production, the role of Madadd-i-ma'ash holders, and institutions involved in agricultural expansion and improvement, and the incidence of rural taxes. The scholarship also marks the growing interest in urban studies, and in the structure and role of the business community in India, in relation to the growth of the economy in India, and its relationship to the State. Several essays deal with subjects as diverse as coinage and mints and the international debate on the impact of the European trading companies and their system of armed trade and monopoly on the Indian economy and the Indian business community. Re-issued in a revised form to synchronize with the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of the Indian History Congress, the essays in this volume are accompanied by a new Preface and an Introduction that highlight the changing contours of emphasis, shifting focus/es and methodologies and projections of research, held under the aegis of the Indian History Congress.
