Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Selected American Prose: The Realistic Movement 1841-1900, edited by Wallace Stegner, is a carefully curated collection of writings that represent the Realist movement in 19th-century American literature. The book showcases the works of prominent authors from this period, including Mark Twain, Henry James, William Dean Howells, and others, who focused on depicting life with a more objective, unembellished approach, often highlighting the complexities and struggles of ordinary people. Through a selection of essays, fiction, and memoirs, Stegner presents a snapshot of the social, political, and cultural issues of the time. The collection offers insight into the Realist movement's emphasis on portraying life as it truly was, rejecting romanticism in favor of more direct and critical reflections of American society.

This informal commentary by Stegner is based on recorded discussions engaged in by him before Dartmouth audiences, with Professors Jay L. Parini and A.B. Paulson and with visiting Author Ishmael Reed, during Stegner's period in residence at the College as a Montgomery Fellow in June and July of 1980. Wallace Earle Stegner (1909-1993) was an American novelist, short story writer, environmentalist, and historian, often called 'The Dean of Western Writers'. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and the U.S. National Book Award in 1977, and through his writing program at Stanford University, influenced generations of writers (Edward Abbey, Ken Kesey, Wendell Berry, Larry McMurtry).
