Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Andre Comte de Takacs (illustrator). Blinn, Edith. The Ashes of My Heart. New York: Mark-Well Publishing Company Inc., 1916. "Second Edition" on title page, i.e. second printing. Octavo, pp. [i-x] xi-xviii [xix-xx] 1-385 [386-388: blank]. Original dark green pictorial cloth, front panel stamped in black and red, spine panel stamped in red. Illustrated with 12 halftones by Andre Comte de Takacs on inserted plates. A pretty ragged copy with considerable wear to cloth, though binding is sound and interior clean. An uncommon vanity press title. #953. $45. Reginald 01480. Smith B-679. Buried away in this morose melodrama are fragments that might interest students of drug literature, New Woman literature, Chinatown literature, and early-20th-century debates about the influence of heredity, will-power, luck and grace in life. An impressively brutal prelude sets the premise. The just-born female offspring of a gambling-addicted father and an opium-addicted mother is given away and surreptitiously foisted on a wealthy woman who sends the girl, named Rhoda, to a convent. But what's bred in the bone comes out in the flesh. When Rhoda, 20, leaves the convent she soon begins her descent: flirtation, dancing, cigarettes, drinks, automobiles all lead up to the two passions of her parents: gambling and opium. The cards are good to her, the pipe is not. She marries Roger, a young medical student, but he does not know how to keep her both safe and stimulated. She eventually winds up moving to Chinatown where she lives in some comfort at a gambling & smoking den with two companions -- Chong, an attendant, and Foo-Gum, her drug supplier and secretary. These two are depicted with a sympathy uncommon for the period. Rhoda wastes away but, at one point, realizing she has a choice about whether to live or die, she summons all her will-power, clutches a talisman and sends forth a psychic call for help. It is heard by a young doctor who, after resisting what seems to him an embarrassingly irrational impulse, ventures into Chinatown and rescues the comatose woman. He then brings her to his sanitarium and cures her. The doctor turns out to be the husband she had abandoned. They are reunited, this time on a more secure foundation of mutual honesty and understanding.

This book is a unique collection of the author's experiences living in a boarding house at the base of the Rocky Mountains in the early 20th century. Centered around fictional character Mother Lee, who ran the boarding house for all manner of travelers and hard-working locals, the book explores themes of kindness, community, and resilience in the face of hardship and misfortune. Through stories of those Mother Lee encountered, the author reflects on the complexities of human nature, the importance of charity, and the profound impact seemingly ordinary people can have on the lives of others. What emerges is a insightful portrait of an unsung hero whose selfless dedication helped define the landscape of a community. This book is an early 20th century fictional narrative that reveals a story of illicit relationships, drug use, and the moral challenges faced by women at that time. Beginning with an unwanted pregnancy and following the life of the child given away at birth, the author paints a picture of contrasting worlds. One follows the innocence of the adopted daughter and her coming of age, while the other unveils the downward spiral of her birth mother. This tale of two women and their connection through an act of desperation explores the impact of secrets, societal constraints, and the destructive power of drug addiction. The author delves into the complexities of love and relationships, questioning societal norms and highlighting the resilient nature of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
