Stokoe's eyewitness account provides a unique perspective on the treatment of this famous prisoner by the British authorities. Stokoe was appalled by the conditions under which Napoleon was forced to live and by the pettiness and vindictiveness of his jailers. The book explores the physical and mental suffering endured by Napoleon during his exile, the impact of his imprisonment on his health, and the complex relationship between the prisoner and his captors. It sheds light on one of the most controversial episodes in British history, challenging the official narrative of Napoleon's treatment and offering a more nuanced and compassionate understanding of this complex historical figure. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

While calling itself a memoir, this book is in fact an account of the years Napoleon spent on St. Helena by a Frenchman, Paul Fremeaux. Fremeaux found the memoirs of John Stokoe, an English naval surgeon who had been at St. Helena from 1817 to 1819, in the possession of a relative. According to Fremeaux's introduction, Stokoe's memoirs were wordy where they should have been succinct, and sparse where they should have been expansive. These perceived faults did not keep Fremeaux from making use of Stokoe's contemporary account of Napoleon in exile to write his own contribution to the partisan debate about how Bonaparte was treated by the British and what sort of captivity he endured in exile.** Further complicating questions of source, narrative, and allegiance is the fact that Fremeaux wrote his account in French. The English translation was by Edith S. Stokoe, great grand-niece of Dr. John Stokoe and holder of the memoir manuscript which is the basis for this book.** "Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight.
